Saturday 13 June 2027 · Hollis Barn, Torrow Valley

Nell & Imari

An orchard ceremony at three, one long table for supper, and a band that only knows loud songs. Everything you need is on this page.

The invitation

We would rather you came as you are

We thought about printing something stiff and gold-edged, then remembered that most of you will be reading this on a train. So here it is: one page, everything on it, no card to lose.

We are getting married in the orchard behind Hollis Barn, where Imari's grandmother kept bees and Nell once reversed a hire car into a gatepost. The valley is beautiful and badly signposted, which is why the travel notes below are longer than the love letter.

If you can only make part of the day, come to the part you can make. If you need a bed, a lift, a quiet room or a plate without dairy, say so in the reply form and we will sort it well before June.

With love — Nell & Imari

The shape of Saturday

Nothing here needs a ticket or a seating plan hunt. Times are the real ones, not the optimistic ones.

2.15 pm

Arrive, park, breathe

The lane in is single track for the last mile, so allow twenty minutes more than your map suggests. Ushers in green will wave you into the upper field; it drains well but wear something you don't mind on grass.

3.00 pm

Ceremony in the orchard

Thirty minutes, two readings, one hymn that nobody will know. Chairs are set on level grass with the aisle end kept free for anyone who would rather not walk far. Phones away, please — this part is unplugged.

3.40 pm

Cider under the walnut trees

Drinks, shade, and the first round of sausage rolls while the barn is turned around behind the hedge. There is lemonade and a proper non-alcoholic cider for anyone not drinking.

5.30 pm

Supper is called

One long table in the barn. Find your name card, then ignore it after pudding. The menu is whatever the kitchen garden is doing in June, served in bowls down the middle of the table.

7.00 pm

Three short speeches

Three, and they have each been told the length. Coffee and something strong come round at the same time.

8.15 pm

The band starts

A five-piece from the next valley who play until they are asked to stop. The barn floor is old brick and uneven in two places, both marked. There is a quieter room upstairs with sofas if the volume becomes too much.

11.30 pm

Last bus to the village

Two coaches run down to the village and the station hotel. Taxis struggle to find the lane after dark, so the bus is genuinely the better plan.

The place

Hollis Barn, at the top of the Torrow Valley

A working stone barn with the doors thrown open, a walled kitchen garden, and an orchard that slopes gently south.

Getting there & staying over

Travel notes worth reading twice

The valley has poor signal and one road. Decide your route before you leave home, and tell us which one you picked in the reply form.

Driving

Come in from the north

Follow signs for the village, then take the second turning past the stone bridge. The southern approach looks shorter and ends in a ford that is not always passable.

  • Parking — upper field, free, grass
  • Leaving a car — fine overnight, collect by 10 am Sunday
  • Allow — 20 extra minutes for the lane
Train & shuttle

Torrow Halt, then our bus

Two shuttles meet trains at the station forecourt. No booking and no charge — just look for the sign with our names on it.

  • Out — 1.30 pm and 2.00 pm
  • Back — 10.45 pm and 11.30 pm
  • Step-free — the later bus has a ramp
Where to sleep

Three honest options

Rooms in the valley are limited, so book early. We have asked the pub to hold its rooms under our names until 1 April.

  • The Bell & Barrow — eight rooms above the pub, five minutes from the shuttle stop
  • Larkfield Cottages — self-catering, kitchens and cots, best for families
  • Barn camping field — bring a tent, hot showers in the stable block
What to wear

Garden formal, and shoes that like grass

The orchard is lawn, the barn floor is old brick, and the path between them is gravel. Heels will fight you all three times. Bring a jacket or a cardigan — the valley cools quickly once the sun drops behind the ridge, and the barn doors stay open.

We would love colour. Beyond that there is no code, no theme and no palette to match; the only thing we would ask you to skip is full-length white. If you are more comfortable in trousers, in a suit, in something borrowed or in the outfit you already own, that is exactly right.

Questions

Asked so far

If your question is not here, add it to the message box in the reply form and we will answer it directly.

Can I bring someone with me?
Your envelope is the guide. If it says “and guest” then yes, absolutely — just give us their name in the form so the kitchen and the name cards match. The barn seats a fixed number, so we cannot stretch beyond the invitation itself.
What happens if it rains?
Everything moves inside the barn at the same times, with no change to the schedule. We decide by eleven on Saturday morning and post it at the top of this page, at the pub, and with the shuttle drivers at the station.
Is the site accessible?
Mostly, and we will fill the gaps. The orchard is level mown grass, the barn has a ramp at the side door, and there is an accessible loo next to the kitchen. The one hard bit is the walk up from the parking field, so tell us in the form and we will keep an aisle-end seat and arrange a car to bring you to the orchard gate.
When can I take photographs?
Any time except during the ceremony. There is no hashtag and nothing to tag. We would ask you not to post pictures of other people's children, and if you would rather not appear online yourself, say so and we will make sure of it.
Can I bring my dog?
Sadly not. The farm has sheep in the next field and the tenant has been generous about the parking, so the only dog on duty is Pip, who has a job as ring-bearer and will be insufferable about it.
I'm driving home — when should I leave?
The lane is unlit and single track, with passing places that are easy to miss in the dark. Most people driving choose to leave before eleven, ahead of the coaches, which keeps the lane clear for the buses coming up.
What is the deadline, and can I change my reply?
Please reply by 1 May 2027. After that the kitchen count is locked, but life happens: if you fall ill or a train is cancelled, tell us at any point and we will deal with it without a fuss.
Is there a gift list or a registry?
No list. If you would like to mark the day, the valley's footpath fund is restoring the stile route past the barn and we would be delighted by a contribution to that. Equally, your company for the afternoon is the whole point.

Tell us you're coming

One form, one minute. Everything you put here goes straight to us — headcount for the kitchen, travel plans for the shuttle, and anything we should quietly arrange in advance.
